[About Obon]
Obon is an event to welcome the spirits of ancestors and recently deceased family members to this world. It begins with "Mukaebi" (welcoming fire) to welcome the spirits and ends with "Okuribi" (sending-off fire) to see them off.
In households, Bon lanterns are set up as Mukaebi and Okuribi to honor the souls of ancestors and deceased family members. Since it is the time of year when ancestors return, let's offer them the best hospitality we can within our means.
Traditionally,
white lanterns for new Obonwere prepared by the deceased's family, and
Bon lanterns with pictures (lanterns used annually)were generally prepared by relatives and friends. However, with recent changes in living environments and the shift in display locations from Buddhist altars to living rooms to suit individual homes, it has become common for the deceased's family to
prepare all lanterns and Obon supplies, with relatives and friends preparing offerings (cash, incense, etc.).
Also, the timing of when to start decorating varies by household. While the main period for display is the four days from the 13th (Mukaebon) to the 16th (Okuribon), the final day of Obon, some people start decorating gradually as soon as the Obon month (July or August) begins, as decorating on the day itself can be rushed.
Hasegawa will respond to your various requests regarding Obon memorial services.
* Videos on the product page may include images where the lantern body appears to be rotating.
This is a visual effect created using a rotating stand for filming. Please note that the actual lantern body does not rotate.| Click here for popular Obon decoration categories |
