Responding to fan requests for a "thick" explanatory booklet, a 40-page A5-sized booklet and a music CD are released as an experimental new "SOUNDTRACK CD BOOK" format.
The 40-page booklet features rare color and monochrome still photos, music recording sheets, and more! It also contains detailed commentary on each track by film critic Yoshihiro Uetsuma, and an extensive analysis of the works and friendships of Akutagawa Yasuji and Takemitsu Toru by Hiaki Tokunaga of the New Three Members. It is a valuable resource not only as reading material but also as a reference.
The music CD includes all original takes composed and recorded by Akutagawa and Takemitsu for this work, including alternate takes and unused tracks, remastered digitally to remove noise, creating the ultimate collection.
From the grand and beautiful main theme to avant-garde pieces expressing the protagonist’s anxious feelings, the album features a variety of compositions, resulting in a gem created by the collaboration of two masters.
While some of the music from this work has been previously included in Takemitsu’s collections, this is the first time a complete standalone recording has been realized.

About the artist

Yasuji Akutagawa (Akutagawa Yasuji)
Born in 1925 in Tokyo. His father was the literary giant Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Gifted in composition from a young age, he entered Tokyo Music School in 1943. After the war, he studied music from various mentors including Akira Ifukube, who became a lecturer. During his studies, he debuted with "Symphonic Three Chapters" and gained international recognition for many of his pure music works, including "Mount Hakkoda" (1977), "Eight Hells Village" (1977), and film scores for movies directed by Ichikawa such as "Wild Fire" (1959), "Otokoto" (1960), "Black Ten Women" (1961), as well as NHK’s Taiga drama "The Red Samurai" (1964), and numerous children's songs like "Bird Song." He was also active in concert activities, including forming the "Three of Us" with young composers Toshiro Maki and Ikuo Taira, and appeared on TV and radio programs like NHK’s "Music Square." He passed away in January 1989 at age 63.

Toru Takemitsu (Takemitsu Toru)
Born in Tokyo in 1930. Inspired by Koji Kise, who was moved by his works during his youth, he mostly learned composition through self-study. Debuted as a composer in 1950, and in 1951 joined the "Experimental Workshop," a group of young artists across various genres, beginning his career as an avant-garde musician. Like Akutagawa, he created works across diverse genres, from pure music to popular songs. An avid film enthusiast, he initially had no intention of composing film music but co-created the score for "Fruits of Madness" (1956), Yujiro Ishihara’s first major film, with Katsu Sato, marking his entry into film scoring. He worked with many masters including Masaki Kobayashi and Hiroshi Teshigahara, composing for "Woman of the Sand" (1964), "Kwaidan" (1965), and "Rashomon" (1985). His bold use of Japanese instruments in period dramas later contributed to his international fame, exemplified by works like "November Steps." After battling cancer, he died in February 1996 at age 65.
Akutagawa and Takemitsu’s collaboration was their second, following "Salaryman Mejiro Sanpei" (1955).
