The Airbus A320 is an aircraft developed by Airbus Industrie as a twin-engine jet passenger aircraft in the 150-seat class. Conceived in 1984, the A320 initially proposed the SA-1 in the narrow-body, 120- to 150-seat class, and the SA-2 in the 150- to 180-seat class. The following year, 1985, it became an official project, and both SA-1 and SA-2 were named A320-100 and A320-200. Following further review, the -100 and -200 were integrated into a class of 150 to 179 seats, and the CFM56 engine was selected.
