1733年から花火大会が催されるなど江戸の盛り場として賑わいを見せていた両国のお寺、
回向院(えこういん)で1768年に最初の大規模な大相撲が行われた。
1909年6月、初の常設相撲場となる両国国技館(初代)が落成。その後、GHQによる
接収などで使用が困難になり、1954年9月 蔵前国技館が正式に完成した。
1985年1月、現在の両国国技館(2代目)が完成し、再び両国に相撲が戻った。
