Yokoyama Taikan[1868 - 1958]Born in Mito, Hitachi Province (present-day Ibaraki Prefecture).
He was a first-term student at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he studied under Okakura Tenshin and Hashimoto Gaho.He participated in the founding of the Japan Art Institute and dedicated himself to the creation of new Japanese paintings.He was awarded the first Imperial Order of Culture and was a master of the modern Japanese art world who continued to lead the Japanese painting scene through the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras. He established the unique "maboroshibyō" (hazy style), which is characterized by subdued lines, a style that is now referred to as "mōrōtai."After his death, he was posthumously awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, Third Class, and the Senior Third Rank.He is an honorary citizen of Ibaraki Prefecture.
