In an era when various things were flooding in from the West, he inherited the traditional techniques of Japanese painting while breaking free from conventional styles with his flexible artistic expression and profound spirituality, creating monumental works.
This artwork is a faithful reproduction of the original painting, featuring Mount Fuji, the motif that brought fame to Taikan's name.
Yokoyama Taikan(1868 - 1958)Born in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture.
He was a first-term student at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he was mentored by Okakura Tenshin and Hashimoto Gaho.
He participated in the founding of the Japan Art Institute and dedicated himself to the creation of new Japanese paintings.
He was awarded the first Imperial Order of Culture and continued to lead the Japanese art world through the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods. He was a master of modern Japanese painting who established the unique "mossenbyoho" (outline-less drawing) style, which suppresses line work and is known today as "moukon-tai" (hazy style).
After his death, he was posthumously awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, Third Class, and Senior Third Rank.
Honorary Citizen of Ibaraki Prefecture.
