During an era when various influences were surging in from the West, Taikan inherited traditional Japanese painting techniques while creating masterpieces born from a free-spirited style and deep spirituality that broke away from conventional forms.
This work, featuring the "Mount Fuji" motif that made Taikan's name known to the world, has been faithfully reproduced from the original painting.
**Yokoyama Taikan [1868 (Meiji 1) – 1958 (Showa 33)]*** Born in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture (Hitachi Province).* As a member of the first graduating class of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, he studied under Okakura Tenshin and Hashimoto Gaho.* Participated in the founding of the Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Art Institute) and devoted himself to the creation of new Japanese painting.* Recipient of the first Order of Culture, he was a master of the modern Japanese art world who continued to lead the field through the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras. He established a unique "Moro-tai" (blurred style) technique that suppressed line drawing.* Posthumously awarded the Senior Third Court Rank and the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.* Honorary Citizen of Ibaraki Prefecture.
