Have you prepared for Obon?
Obon is a festival to welcome the spirits of ancestors and close family members who have passed away. It begins with the '迎え火' (welcoming fire) and ends with the '送り火' (sending fire).
In households, bon lanterns are set up as迎え火 and送り火 to honor the spirits of ancestors and deceased family members. Since it is the once-a-year occasion when ancestors return, do your best to host them warmly within your means.
Traditionally,White lanterns for the first Bon (Shiromon Ten)were prepared by the family of the deceased, and thelanterns with designs (used annually)were generally prepared by relatives or acquaintances. However, due to recent changes in living environments, the placement and space for decorations have shifted from Buddhist altars to living rooms, influencing the way they are displayed. As a result, the family of the deceased now oftenprepares all lanterns and Bon supplies, while relatives and acquaintances tend to prepare offerings (cash, incense, etc.).Furthermore, the timing for starting decorations varies by household. Decorations are typically put up from the first day of Obon (迎え盆) on the 13th to the final day on the 16th, but since decorating on the day itself can be hectic, many start gradually in the Obon month (July or August).
