Lemons are said to originate from the foothills of the Himalayas in India. They are a representative variety of aromatic citrus and are cultivated worldwide. They were introduced to Japan from America during the Meiji era and have been cultivated mainly in the Setouchi region.
Mucha-en has been seriously engaged in lemon cultivation in recent years, but the difficulty is their sensitivity to cold. Especially when a severe cold wave hits in winter, the leaves fall off, weakening the trees and taking years to recover. Also, lemon branches have sharp thorns, and if blown by strong winds, the fruits and leaves can get damaged, leading to diseases. In the future, we are increasing the number of trees planted to focus on developing processed products, but we are struggling to grow them, being at the mercy of the weather.
Although the shipping period is long, from October to the following spring, the juice is squeezed from January to March when the juice content is high.
~ About Mucha-en ~
* Building relationships between agriculture and people, starting with mandarins.
In 1974, when the production of Satsuma mandarins nationwide reached its peak and began to exceed demand, the successors of mandarin farmers, concerned about the future of regional agriculture and questioning the heavy use of chemicals such as pesticides in citrus cultivation, rented 15 ares of Iyokan orchards and established them as an experimental farm for pesticide-free cultivation. This was the beginning of Mucha-en.
"Cultivating mandarins without relying on pesticides or chemical fertilizers" was the starting point for Mucha-en and remains their fundamental philosophy today.
Currently, the cultivation area of farmers working together in Akihama Town has expanded to over 100 hectares. They are promoting organic farming and also working on regional development that utilizes the mountains and the sea. Furthermore, using the expansion of organic farming as a foothold, they aim to build a new type of agricultural system where young people can take root in the region and live.

Akihama Town, Seiyo City, Ehime Prefecture, faces Uwajima Bay to the south and is blessed with a warm climate. Passing through the Nofuku Tunnel at the entrance reveals a spectacular view of Uwajima Bay, the village, and the mandarin orange groves on steep slopes.
The mountains are terraced fields built with limestone, which shine white in the sunlight, illuminating the surrounding trees. The soil is well-drained and blessed with natural conditions for producing delicious mandarins, such as minerals carried by the sea breeze.
In such a naturally blessed environment, over 80 farmers cultivate mandarins for Mucha-en, following a cultivation policy that is "reasonable for both people and nature." Citrus fruits bear fruit only once a year. Even if pesticides must be used, efforts are made to minimize their use during the one-year cultivation period.
~ Mucha-en's Cultivation Policy ~
* Do not use herbicides or chemical fertilizers.* Start with zero pesticides and minimize their use as much as possible.* If plant diseases or insect pests occur, first respond with naturally derived pesticides (*1) that can be used in organic cultivation.* Only in cases of abnormal outbreaks that cannot be controlled even then, use pesticides outside organic cultivation standards with minimal application (*2).
(*1) Permitted for use in organic cultivation under the Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS).(*2) In general citrus cultivation in Ehime Prefecture, 18 applications are the guideline.
