The origin of lemons is said to be the foothills of the Himalayas in India. They are a representative variety of aromatic citrus and are cultivated worldwide. In Japan, they were introduced from America during the Meiji era and have been mainly cultivated in the Seto Inland Sea region.
At Mucha Chachan, we have recently been seriously engaged in lemon cultivation. However, a challenge is that lemons are sensitive to cold. Especially when severe winter cold waves occur, the trees shed leaves and weaken, taking many years to recover. Additionally, lemon branches have sharp thorns, and strong winds can damage the fruit and leaves, leading to disease. We are increasing the number of trees planted to develop processed products, but we are still struggling with weather fluctuations.
The shipping period is from October to the following spring, but juice extraction is carefully carried out mainly from January to March when the juice naturally accumulates.

- Building a relationship between agriculture and people starting with mandarins
In 1974, when the nationwide production of Wenshu mandarins peaked and began to become excessive, successor farmers who doubted the heavy use of pesticides and chemical substances in citrus cultivation borrowed 15 ares of Iyo mikan orchards to start an experimental farm without pesticides, marking the beginning of Mucha Chachan.
The start of Mucha Chachan was “growing mandarins without relying on pesticides or chemical fertilizers,” which remains the fundamental principle today.
Currently, the cultivation area with farmers working together in Mihama Town exceeds 100 hectares. We are promoting organic farming and regional development that leverages mountains and the sea. Additionally, by scaling up organic farming, we aim to build a new agricultural system where young people can live rooted in the community.
- Making the most of favorable terrain and maintaining natural conditions as much as possible
Mihama Town in Nishi Iyo City, Ehime Prefecture, faces Uwa Sea to the south. Passing through the Nokufuku Tunnel at the entrance, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Uwa Sea, the village, and steep mandarin orchards.
The terraced fields made of limestone shine white under the sun, illuminating the surrounding trees. The soil drains well and is rich in minerals carried by the sea breeze, creating ideal natural conditions for delicious mandarins.
Under this natural environment, following a cultivation policy that is “reasonable for both people and nature,” more than 80 farmers are currently growing mandarins at Mucha Chachan. Since citrus bears fruit only once a year, even if pesticides are used, efforts are made to minimize their use throughout the year.
~ Mucha Chachan’s Cultivation Policy ~
- No use of herbicides or chemical fertilizers.- Starting with zero pesticides, and minimizing the number of applications as much as possible.- When pests or diseases occur, first respond with natural-origin pesticides permitted in organic farming (*1).- If abnormal occurrences cannot be controlled, only then use pesticides outside organic standards, minimally (*2).
(*1) Pesticides approved for use in organic cultivation according to Japan Agricultural Standards (JAS).
(*2) In typical citrus cultivation in Ehime Prefecture, the guideline is about 18 applications.
