Product Description
This is a tatami mat overlay made from 100% Igusa (rush grass) cultivated with reduced pesticides in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture. Its features include:
- (1) Superior durability and elasticity compared to ordinary Igusa, with the characteristic bluish-green color of Igusa lasting longer.
- (2) Even after sun exposure causes fading, it gradually changes to a beautiful amber color.
- (3) It has the ability to absorb nitrogen dioxide, which is a cause of air pollution, and also works excellently to regulate room humidity.
Simply laying this overlay can refresh your tatami room. It is suitable for revitalizing sun-damaged tatami or as a cover to prevent soiling of new tatami mats.
It uses domestically produced Igusa (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture), which is longer than 130 cm, classified as JAS 1 (a high-grade class among tatami mats). The Igusa is carefully selected for its high quality, thick, and long fibers woven densely, making it durable and resilient, with a pleasant volume that feels comfortable on the skin.
Approximately 88 cm of the 130 cm length is used. This product features a luxurious design with minimal white parts at the border edge, using long Igusa fibers. (The white parts are not sunburned; they are the color of the base and tip of the Igusa.) Longer Igusa is considered more premium. The tips of Igusa are reddish-brown, the base is white, and the middle is blue (green). The more high-quality blue middle parts are used, the more durable and beautiful the finish.
As Igusa is used, it naturally sun-bleaches, but those with more blue middle parts tend to age evenly and beautifully, developing a rich patina.
This overlay is woven with the same technique as tatami mats, called "ori-hiki" (woven with pulled threads). Compared to double weave, it has a higher thread count, making it more durable. Its smooth surface makes it less likely to accumulate dust.
For those who want long-lasting use or seek durability, we recommend the pulled thread weave.
It uses domestically produced Igusa from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture. Japanese Igusa fibers are thick, with a coarse outer skin and fine fibers, providing elasticity and excellent durability.
Igusa has air purification properties, humidity regulation, and is resistant to dirt, making it a practical choice.
The surface has been treated with "Hiba Essence," extracted from Hiba wood from Aomori Prefecture, using the manufacturer's proprietary technology. Hiba Essence contains Hinokitiol, a natural substance with extremely high antibacterial properties. (Compared to untreated products, it offers antibacterial and deodorizing effects.)
Both sides of the overlay can be used, making it economical.
