Product Description
This is a top mat with water-repellent treatment applied to both sides of the rush grass fabric (however, it does not repel water at temperatures above 40°C such as hot water, tea, or coffee). Simply laying this top mat can refresh your tatami room. It can be used to refresh sun-damaged tatami or as a cover to prevent soiling of new tatami mats.
Unlike typical rush grass mats that require dry wiping before use, this product has a water-repellent coating applied over the dyed rush grass fabric, so dry wiping is unnecessary. You can use the product immediately after unfolding.
Since water-repellent treatment is applied to both sides of the fabric, it helps prevent stains and dirt adhesion. It is a reversible, double-sided mat, making it economical.
The rush grass used is domestically produced (Kyushu region), measuring approximately 115–120 cm in length, with about 88 cm used. The piping edge tends to have a slight whitish tint (not due to sunburn, but the color of the rush grass at the base and tip). Longer rush grass is considered more luxurious.
Rush grass has a natural color gradient: the tips are reddish-brown, the base is white, and the middle is blue (green). Using more of the high-quality blue middle section results in a durable and beautiful finish.
Over time, rush grass naturally develops a sun-tanned appearance, but those with more blue middle sections tend to tan evenly and attractively, adding character.
The rush grass is domestically produced (Kyushu), characterized by thicker stalks, a thick epidermis, and fine fibers, making it resilient and durable.
Rush grass has air-purifying properties, helps regulate humidity, and is resistant to dirt.
It is treated with Aomori cypress (Hiba) for antibacterial and deodorizing effects. Both sides of the mat can be used, making it economical.
