Product Description
This is a tatami mat cover (ushiki) designed for both aesthetic beauty and durability. It uses hemp and cotton threads for the warp, with twice the amount of thread compared to regular itohiki-ori (pull-thread weave). Combining hemp and cotton threads makes the threads themselves very strong. Additionally, each thread becomes thicker, creating a distinct texture and a beautiful appearance when woven. Simply laying this cover over your tatami room will refresh it. Use it to refresh tatami that has been discolored by sunlight, or as a cover to protect new tatami from getting dirty. We use domestically produced (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, a region famous for igusa) igusa of JAS Class 1 (a superior class of tatami surface) with a length of 135 cm or more, which is typically used for tatami surfaces. The carefully selected, high-quality, thick, and long igusa is woven at high density, making it durable and long-lasting, with a comfortable volume against the skin. Approximately 88 cm of the 130 cm length is used. This is a high-quality product that uses long igusa, resulting in less white at the edges. (The white parts are not from sun damage; they are the colors of the root and tip of the igusa.) Longer igusa is considered more valuable. Igusa is reddish-brown at the tip, white at the root, and green in the middle. Using more of the good quality green part in the middle results in a stronger and more beautiful finish. Also, as igusa ages and is exposed to sunlight, it develops a patina. Products using more of the green middle part will age evenly and beautifully. This product is finished with an itohiki-ori weave, the same as tatami surfaces. Compared to soumoku-ori (double-plain weave), it is more durable due to the higher density of igusa. Its smooth surface makes it difficult for dust to accumulate. Itohiki-ori is recommended for those who want to use it for a long time or require durability. We use domestically produced igusa (from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture). Domestic igusa is thick, has a thick epidermis, and fine fibers, giving it elasticity and excellent durability. Igusa has air-purifying and humidity-regulating properties, and is resistant to dirt. "Hiba essence," extracted from Aomori Hiba trees, has been applied to the fabric surface using the manufacturer's unique technology. Hiba essence contains hinokitiol, a substance with extremely high antibacterial properties for a natural material. (Compared to untreated products, it has antibacterial and deodorizing effects.) Both sides can be used, making it economical. *Please note that as this is a natural material and each piece is handcrafted by artisans, there may be variations in shape and slight differences from the stated size.
