Product description
This is a top-quality mat that emphasizes both aesthetic beauty and durability. It uses hemp and cotton threads for the warp, with twice the amount of thread compared to standard woven threads. Combining hemp and cotton threads makes the threads themselves very strong. Additionally, because each thread is thicker, the woven pattern clearly shows the texture with pronounced bumps, resulting in a very beautiful appearance. Simply placing this mat over your tatami can refresh the look of your room. It is suitable for refreshing sun-damaged tatami or as a cover to prevent soiling of new tatami mats.
The rush grass used is domestically produced in Kumamoto Prefecture, Yatsushiro, and is longer than 135 cm, which is classified as JAS1 (a high-grade class among tatami mats). It is carefully selected high-quality, thick, and long rush grass woven densely, making it durable and resilient, with a pleasant volume that feels comfortable on the skin. About 88 cm of the 130 cm length is used. This product uses longer rush grass with less white at the border edge, making it a premium item. (The white parts are not sunburn; they are the color of the base and tip of the rush grass.) Longer rush grass is considered more luxurious. The rush grass has a reddish-brown tip, a white base, and a blue (green) middle. The more high-quality blue parts used in the middle, the stronger and more beautiful the finish.
Rush grass naturally develops a sun-tanned appearance over time, but those with more blue in the middle tend to tan evenly and beautifully, developing a rich patina. This product is woven with the same weaving method as tatami mats, using thread weaving. Compared to double weave, it has a higher density of rush grass, making it more durable. Its smooth surface makes it less likely to accumulate dust. For those who want long-lasting use or durability, thread weaving is recommended.
It uses domestically produced rush grass from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture. Japanese rush grass has thicker stalks, a thicker epidermis, and finer fibers, providing elasticity and excellent durability. Rush grass also has air purification and humidity regulation properties and is resistant to dirt.
The surface has been treated with "Hiba essence" extracted from the Hiba wood of Aomori Prefecture, processed with the manufacturer's proprietary technology. Hiba essence contains hinokitiol, a natural substance with extremely high antibacterial properties. (Compared to untreated products, it offers antibacterial and deodorizing effects.) Both sides can be used, making it economical.
