Product Description

Simply laying a top mat can refresh your tatami room. It is suitable for refreshing tatami that has become sun-bleached, and can be used as a cover to prevent dirt on new tatami mats. It uses long, domestically produced (Kyushu) igusa (rush grass) that is over 120 cm in length. Approximately 88 cm of this is used. It is a high-quality product made with long igusa that has less white part at the border edge. (The white part is not due to sunburn; it is the color of the base and tip of the igusa.) Longer igusa is more luxurious. The tips of the igusa are reddish-brown, the base is white, and the middle is blue (green). The more high-quality blue parts used in the middle, the more durable and beautiful the finish. Although igusa will develop a sun-bleached appearance over time, those with more blue in the middle tend to age evenly and attractively, developing a nuanced patina.

This product is finished with a thread-drawn weaving method, similar to tatami mat weaving. Compared to double-twist weaving, it uses more threads per unit area, making it more durable. The surface is smooth, which makes it less likely to accumulate dust. For those who want long-lasting use or durability, thread-drawn weaving is recommended.

It uses domestically produced (Kyushu) igusa. Japanese igusa is thicker, has a thicker epidermis, and finer fibers, making it elastic and highly durable. Igusa has air-purifying properties, humidity regulation, and is resistant to dirt, among other features. It is treated with Aomori Hiba (Japanese cypress) for antibacterial and deodorizing effects. Both sides can be used, making it economical.
