This is a story set during the cheerful spring of the Meiji era, vividly depicting the life of a genius botanist, Mantaro Makino, who ran freely through the bright days of Meiji.
The story spans from the late Edo period through the Meiji era, and into the tumultuous Taisho and Showa periods.
Amidst the chaos of these times, it portrays the passionate and dedicated life of the protagonist, Mantaro Makino, and his wife, Sueko, filled with joy and discovery, in a tumultuous and eventful life.
★ The 108th serial TV novel "Ranman" is an original story restructured around the life of Dr. Tomitaro Makino, a botanist from Kochi Prefecture, often called the father of Japanese botany.
★ The protagonist, Mantaro Makino, is played by Ryunosuke Kamiki. He has appeared in many works including the films "Kirishima, Stop the Club," "Bakuman," and "March Comes in Like a Lion."
In NHK, he has starred in Taiga dramas such as "Yoshitsune," "Taira no Kiyomori," "Idaten ~Tokyo Olympic Story~," and "Yake ni Bendo no Bengoshi ga Gakko de Hoeru."
With a unique fresh sensibility and outstanding acting skills, he is a young actor highly anticipated for his future both in ability and popularity.
★ The heroine, Sueko, is played by Minami Hamabe. She made her acting debut starring in the film "Ant and Love Letter."
In NHK, she has starred in the special drama "Pure! The One-Day Idol Chief's Case Files," the Drama 10 "Tario: Revenge Proxy," and this is her second appearance in a serial TV novel since "Mare" in 2015.
★ The author is Ikue Nagata, who has written for NHK special dramas such as "Under the Mango Tree ~ Luzon Island, War Fire Promises," "Tabiya Okare," the premium drama "Sugu Shinu N Dakara," and the Drama 10 "Gunjou Ryouiki."
★ The narration is by Aoi Miyazaki, who starred in the serial TV novel "Junjou Kirari" and the Taiga drama "Atsu Hime."
The protagonist's mother, Hisa, is played by Ryoko Hirosue; her sister, Aya, by Yui Sakuma; and her grandmother, Taki, by Keiko Matsuzaka.
★ The theme song is "Ai no Hana" ("Flower of Love") by the singer-songwriter Aimyong, who enjoys overwhelming support from young people.
The lyrics, which describe the "power of love," and her warm singing voice gently envelop the story.
