About the artist

【Jo Kondo (composer)】
Born in Tokyo in 1947. Graduated from the composition department of Tokyo University of the Arts in 1972.
Received a scholarship from the John D. Rockefeller III Foundation in 1977-1978 and stayed in New York for a year. In 1979, he served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Victoria in Canada at the invitation of the Canada Council. Stayed in London as a Senior Fellow of the British Council in 1986. In 1987, he was a Composer-in-Residence at Hartford University and Hart Music School in the US. In the same year and in 2000, he also taught at the Dartington International Summer School in the UK. He has given lectures on his works at many universities across Europe and America, including Harvard University, New England Conservatory (both US), York University (UK), Cologne University, Hamburg University of Music (Germany), and The Hague Conservatory (Netherlands).
In 1980, he formed the contemporary music ensemble "Musica Practica" and served as music director until its disbandment in 1991.
He has composed over 130 works ranging from solo pieces, chamber music, orchestral works, operas, to electronic music, almost all of which are published by UK’s York University Music Publishing (UYMP) and C.F. Peters in the US. These works are frequently performed in Japan and Europe/America, and many recordings have been released on labels such as Hat Art, ALM, Fontec, and Deutsche Grammophon.
He has received numerous commissions from various organizations and has been featured at many international music festivals, including "Autumn in Paris" (France), "Almeida International Music Festival" (UK), and "May in Florence" (Italy). European performers such as the Ibsen Ensemble and New Ensemble from the Netherlands, the London Sinfonietta, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, and Oliver Nassen frequently perform Kondo’s works.
Since 1979, he has published numerous writings on composition and aesthetics, including "Line Music," "Seeds of Music," "Thoughts of the Ear," "Mystery of..." and "Throwing Sound—The Scope of Compositional Thought," as well as translated works such as Cage’s "The Zero Degree of Music" (edited and translated) and Hughes’ "A History of European Music" (co-translated). He is also an active contributor to the "Contemporary Music Review" as a Japanese editorial member.
He has served as a judge for many international competitions, including the Gaudeamus International Composers' Competition (Netherlands).
In recent years, his works have been featured as a theme composer at the 2005 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (UK) and a special feature at Tanglewood Music Festival (US) in 2011.
His CDs are released as "Jo Kondo Works Collection" on various labels, including ALM-ALCD-67, ALM-ALCD-74, ALM-ALCD-93, among others.
He is an emeritus professor at Ochanomizu University and also teaches composition at Tokyo University of the Arts.
In 2012, he was elected a lifetime honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
