The legendary TV drama "Journey to the West" is finally being released on DVD! "Journey to the West," which aired for a total of 26 episodes from October 1, 1978, to April 1, 1979, as a commemorative program for Nippon TV's 25th anniversary and received overwhelming support, is finally being released on DVD! It featured innovative continental-style direction, including groundbreaking location shooting in China and at the foot of Mt. Fuji for its time, and utilized special effects such as compositing and miniatures to depict the vast world of "Journey to the West." The story unfolds with a turbulent journey to India, beginning with the birth of the Monkey King from a stone and his encounters with Tripitaka, Sha Wujing, and Zhu Bajie. The comical interactions between the Monkey King, Sha Wujing, and Zhu Bajie were also one of the reasons for the drama's popularity. The cast included the renowned Masakazu Sakai as the Monkey King, Masako Natsume as Tripitaka, Shirō Kishi (then/now Shiro Kishibe) as Sha Wujing, and Toshiyuki Nishida as Zhu Bajie. Masako Natsume's portrayal of Tripitaka, who is originally male, also became a topic of conversation. The theme song "Monkey Magic" and the ending theme "Gandhara" by Godiego were both major hits. The DVD-BOX will include a bonus disc containing a roundtable discussion recorded on June 22, 2006, in a studio in Tokyo where the set "Basho-do" (the house of the female immortal who owns the Basho fan at the foot of Mt. Fire, appearing in episode 24) was recreated. In this discussion, Masakazu Sakai, Shiro Kishibe, and Toshiyuki Nishida share behind-the-scenes stories from the filming that they can only tell now, as well as episodes with Masako Natsume and various guests. The bonus disc will be divided into two parts, I and II, and will be enclosed in each respective box.
