The legendary television drama "Journey to the West" is finally available on DVD! Broadcast as a commemorative program for Nippon Television's 25th anniversary, it aired from October 1, 1978, to April 1, 1979, over a total of 26 episodes, and received overwhelming support. The DVD release is highly anticipated! At the time, innovative Chinese location shoots and outdoor filming on the foothills of Mount Fuji were used to create a continental atmosphere, along with the use of compositing and miniatures to depict the vast world of "Journey to the West." The story begins with Sun Wukong, born from a stone, and follows his tumultuous journey to India, meeting Tripitaka, Sha Wujing, and Zhu Bajie. The humorous interactions between Sun Wukong, Sha Wujing, and Zhu Bajie were also among the drama's popular features. The cast includes Masaki Sakai as Sun Wukong, Masako Natsume as Tripitaka, Shiro Kishibe (then, now Shiro Kishibe) as Sha Wujing, and Toshiyuki Nishida as Zhu Bajie. Notably, Masako Natsume, a woman, played the traditionally male Tripitaka. The theme song "Monkey Magic" by Godiego and the ending theme "Gandhara" both became huge hits. The DVD-BOX includes a special disc recorded at a recreated set of "Basho Cave" (the house of the fairy residing in the house of the fire mountain at the foot of Mount Fuji, appearing in episode 24) in a studio in Tokyo on June 22, 2006. It features Masaki Sakai, Shiro Kishibe, and Toshiyuki Nishida sharing behind-the-scenes stories from filming, as well as episodes with Masako Natsume and various guests, in a joint interview split into two parts, I and II.
