The front side features Naoe Kanetsugu's symbol, the "Ai" (love) crest, reproduced with brilliant gold plating. The "Kai" model's distinctive feature is on the back side. In addition to Kanetsugu's handwritten "Gogaku Gansho" (Five Joys Petition), the Sanskrit characters of Fugen Bosatsu, whom he revered, emerge from auspicious clouds.
What is the "Gogaku Gansho"?
This is a petition that Kanetsugu, while in winter encampment at Osaka in Keicho 20 (1615), dedicated to the Toshi-tokujin (Deity of the Year) of that year. It is a document handwritten by Kanetsugu, included in the National Treasure Uesugi Family Documents.
