In 1974, when the production of Satsuma mandarins nationwide reached its peak and began to exceed demand, successors of mandarin farmers, concerned about the future of regional agriculture and questioning the heavy use of chemicals such as pesticides in citrus cultivation, rented a 15-are Iyokan orchard and began experimental cultivation without pesticides during the growing season. This marked the beginning of Mucha-en.

"Cultivating mandarins without relying on pesticides or chemical fertilizers" was the starting point for Mucha-en and remains their fundamental principle to this day.
