Description:
This top mat is crafted with a focus on visual beauty and durability. It uses hemp and cotton threads for the warp, employing twice the amount of thread compared to standard woven threads. Combining hemp and cotton threads makes the threads themselves very strong. Additionally, each thread is thicker, resulting in a clear woven texture with prominent bumps, creating a very beautiful appearance. Simply placing this mat over your existing tatami can refresh the look of your room. It is suitable for refreshing tatami that has become sun-bleached, and can be used as a cover to prevent soiling of new tatami.
The mat uses domestically produced igusa (rush grass) from Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, with a length of at least 135cm, classified as JAS Class 1 (a high-grade tatami mat surface). It is made from carefully selected, high-quality, thick, and long igusa, woven densely for durability and a pleasant volume that feels comfortable on the skin. About 88cm of the 130cm length is used.
This product features a luxurious design with minimal white parts at the edges, using long igusa strands. (The white parts are not sun-bleaching; they are the color of the base and tips of the igusa.) Longer igusa is considered more premium. The tips of the igusa are reddish-brown, the base is white, and the middle is blue (green). Using more high-quality blue parts in the middle results in a sturdy and beautiful finish. Although igusa naturally develops a sun-bleached patina over time, those with more blue in the middle tend to age evenly and attractively, developing a nuanced appearance.
This product is woven with a thread-drawn weaving method similar to tatami surface weaving. Compared to double weave, it contains more threads, making it more durable. Its smooth surface reduces dust accumulation. For those seeking long-term use and durability, thread-drawn weaving is recommended.
The igusa used is domestically produced in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture. Japanese-grown igusa features thicker individual stalks, thicker epidermis, and finer fibers, providing elasticity and excellent durability. Igusa has air-purifying and humidity-regulating properties and is resistant to dirt.
Additionally, "Hiba Essence" extracted from the Hiba wood of Aomori Prefecture has been processed onto the fabric surface using our proprietary technology. Hiba Essence contains hinokitiol, a natural substance with extremely high antibacterial properties. (Compared to untreated products, it offers antibacterial and deodorizing effects.)
Both sides of the mat can be used, making it economical.
