Description:This top mat is crafted with a focus on visual beauty and durability. It uses hemp and cotton threads for the warp, employing twice the amount of thread compared to standard woven threads. Combining hemp and cotton threads makes the threads themselves very strong. Additionally, because each thread is thicker, the woven pattern clearly shows a textured relief, resulting in a very beautiful appearance. Simply placing this mat on top can refresh a tatami room. It is suitable for refreshing tatami that has become sun-bleached, and can be used as a cover to prevent soiling of new tatami mats.
The rush grass used is domestically produced in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, and is classified as JAS 1 (a high-grade class among tatami mats). It is over 135 cm in length, which is typical for high-quality rush grass. The rush grass is carefully selected for its thick, long, and high-quality fibers, woven densely to ensure durability and a pleasant volume that feels comfortable against the skin. About 88 cm of the 130 cm length is used.
This product uses longer rush grass with less white at the edges, making it a premium item. (The white parts are not sun-bleached; they are the color of the base and tip of the rush grass.) Longer rush grass is considered more luxurious. The rush grass has a reddish-brown tip, a white base, and a blue (green) middle. Using more of the high-quality blue middle part results in a stronger, more beautiful finish. Over time, rush grass naturally develops a sun-bleached appearance, but those with more blue middle parts tend to age evenly and attractively, developing a rich patina.
This mat is woven with the same technique as tatami mats, using a thread-woven method. Compared to double weave, it contains more rush grass threads, making it more durable. Its smooth surface reduces dust accumulation. For those seeking long-term use and durability, thread-woven mats are recommended.
The rush grass used is domestically produced in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture. Japanese rush grass is characterized by thick fibers, a thick epidermis, and fine fiber texture, providing elasticity and excellent durability. Rush grass also has air purification and humidity regulation properties and is resistant to dirt.
The surface has been treated with "Hiba Essence," extracted from the Hiba wood of Aomori Prefecture, using the manufacturer's proprietary technology. Hiba Essence contains hinokitiol, a natural substance with extremely high antibacterial properties. (Compared to untreated rush grass, it offers antibacterial and deodorizing effects.)
Both sides of the mat can be used, making it economical.
