His latest work, set in a seaside movie theater in Onomichi, is truly a "treasure chest of cinema"!
The story traces the history of war while unfolding through various film expressions such as silent films, talkies, action, and musicals.
As main cast, Takuro Atsugi, Ryuuto Hosoyamada, and Yoshihiko Hosoda play three young men who time-leap into the world of cinema,
with heroines each destined for the three men, played by Rie Yoshida, making her film debut, Riko Narumi, participating for the first time in the Obayashi group, and Hirona Yamazaki, continuing from the previous film.
Additionally, the leading actress of the traveling theater troupe "Sakura Troupe," which is central to the story, is played by Takako Tokiwa, who has supported recent Obayashi works.
The music is composed by Kosuke Yamashita, who has worked on many of Director Obayashi’s recent films.
The soundtrack features nostalgic songs sung by heroine Rie Yoshida, including "Rainy Moon," "The Song of the Moving Picture," and "Rain," as well as "Autumn in the Village" sung with Takako Tokiwa.
Obayashi himself plays Chopin’s "Farewell Song" on the piano. The ending includes "Buki Ugi (Mucha Bō Benkei)," famous from the song by Tetsuya Takeda, written by Toriro Miki & Enoken!
