明治22年7月1日呉鎮守府が開庁告示、同年中に呉海兵団・呉海軍病院なども設置され、明治36年には呉海軍造船廠と呉海軍造兵廠をもって呉海軍工廠が設立されるなど帝国海軍の主要な基地として発展してきました。
昭和20年（1945）８月15日の終戦を経て、同年11月30日の海軍省廃止に伴い、呉鎮守府は閉庁されることとなり、その一方で大戦末期、米軍は瀬戸内海を含む通航量の多い海峡や湾港に多数の機雷を投下し、それらの除去と通航の安全確保は戦後復興の絶対条件でもあったことから、敗戦にもかかわらず掃海部隊等による掃海作業は連綿と続けられることとなりました。
昭和27年（1952）４月26日海上自衛隊の前身となる海上警備隊が創設され、同年８月１日の保安庁設置、海上警備隊から警備隊への改称を経て、昭和29年（1954）７月１日防衛庁設置及び海上自衛隊創設と同時に、海上自衛隊呉地方隊が新編され、その司令部として呉地方総監部が呉鎮守府跡である現在の場所に置かれ、今に至っております。
