Originally a deity who protected monasteries and kitchens, it is said to have chased and recovered the bones of Buddha stolen by a demon, and from the folk belief that it ran around collecting food for Buddha, it came to be known as the god of running and protection against theft.
The word "gochisou" (feast) is also said to have originated from this folk belief.
Furthermore, fast runners came to be called "Jikoten" (Idaten).
