Although the Okinawa Urban Monorail holds the record, the Matsuura Railway is still considered the westernmost railway line in Japan for general railway lines. The MR-600 series train departs from Arita Station, which it shares with the Sasebo Line, and heads north through gentle rural landscapes to Imari. At Imari Station, the operating system changes and the direction of travel also shifts, so there are no direct through trains. The train occasionally travels westward, with views of Imari Bay to the right. The words "Japan's Westernmost Point" can still be seen at Tabira-Hiradoguchi Station. The direction of travel changes again, heading south, passing through former coal mining areas that are close to the coastline but also have a mountainous atmosphere. The branch lines and old track beds from the Japanese National Railways era, and even earlier narrow-gauge eras, are also interesting. Although Matsuura Railway has established many new stations after its conversion from JR, this trend becomes more pronounced as it enters Sasebo city. The train carefully stops at stations that are only 200 meters apart, heading towards the terminal station, Sasebo.
