Artist: Tomikichiro Tokuriki (March 22, 1902 - July 1, 2000)
A printmaker from the late Meiji era to the Heisei era.
Born into the 12th generation of a family that managed the painting department of Nishi Honganji Temple in Kyoto.
After studying at Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, he graduated from Kyoto Municipal College of Painting in 1923.
After graduation, he studied under Bakusen Tsuchida.
In 1928, he exhibited a Japanese painting at the Kokuga Sosakuka Kyokai (National Painting Creators Association) and received the Chogyu Prize.
The following year, 1929, he co-founded the Kyoto Creative Print Association with Benji Asada, Takeji Asano, Tohei Kamei, and others, and also received the Kokuga Prize.
He was active in creative work mainly in Kyoto and researched Buddhist prints.
Around this time, Tokuriki began woodblock printing and co-founded the magazine "Hanga" with Yoichi Hiratsuka, Shiko Munakata, and others.
In 1931, he published the print collection "Sosaku Hanga Hana-tsukushi" with Asada, Asano, Kamei, and others, from Uchida Bijutsu Shoshi, run by Kiichi Uchida.
He also founded the magazine "Taishu Hanga" (Popular Prints), aiming to combine the popularity and artistry of prints, at the recommendation of Anson Tsuchida.
After World War II, he established the print workshop "Matsu-kyu" and trained apprentices.
He began producing popular prints in 1968 and held several solo exhibitions.
In 1972, he created a collection of 12 prints depicting the footprints of saints for Nishi Honganji Temple.
For his achievements, he received the Fourth Class Order of the Sacred Treasure and the Kyoto City Cultural Merit Award.
