Inspired by Walter Carlos's "Switch on Bach," Tomita imported a Moog synthesizer personally, created an electronic music studio at home, and began activities as a synthesizer music composer.
His debut work "Clair de Lune" is a synth version of Debussy's piano piece, released in 1974 by RCA Records in the U.S.
Initially, he approached various Japanese record companies including Columbia for release, but all were declined, which is a well-known anecdote.
As a result, it was imported back to Japan with the added prestige of reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Classical Chart and being the first Japanese artist to be nominated for a Grammy Award.
This work completely overturned the traditional image of electronic music as sterile soundscapes, revealing the potential of synth music to the world, and was both innovative and shocking.
Many fans regard "Clair de Lune" as Tomita's greatest masterpiece.
Without this work, subsequent synth music would not have existed, to say the least.
