Makoto Konno (voice: Riisa Naka), a second-year high school student, has a strange experience in a laboratory on a summer Saturday, and from then on, she gains the power of "time-leap," the ability to jump through time.
At first, she enjoys her days by skillfully using this power, but when her close friend Chiaki (voice: Takuya Ishida) confesses his feelings to her, and she tries to rewind time to make it as if it never happened, the gears of fate begin to turn awry...
This is a masterpiece of science fiction juvenile animation, depicted with a completely new concept by the brilliant director Mamoru Hosoda, with a flavor that is more of a sequel to Nobuhiko Obayashi's live-action film adaptation based on Tsutsui's original work, rather than a direct adaptation of the original.
The heroine, who uses time-leap for selfish reasons like eating pudding multiple times and improving her test scores, finds that the more she tries to escape her own romantic feelings, the worse the situation becomes. This irony, coupled with her proactive actions to overcome it with her own strength, fills the film with her vivacity, making her truly worthy of being called the modern "Girl Who Leapt Through Time."
It's also a nice touch that Kazuko Yoshiyama (voice: Sachie Hara), the heroine of the original novel, appears as Makoto's aunt and subtly supports the second generation. As mentioned many times, this is a must-see masterpiece. (Tatsuya Masutou)
