Detailed Description
The more well-known a piece is, the more musicians struggle with how to perform it. However, in the case of Mariiko Tsumuji, she does not show any such struggle to the listener. She enters the piece without hesitation and seems to simply play according to her own feelings. From her performance, there is hardly any sense of trying to play stylishly, show off technique, play cutely, or play elegantly. She is straightforward without arrogance. She conveys genuine emotion. Naturally, her interpretation is rich. The classical soul ballads that seem most suited to her temperament are pieces like Rachmaninoff's 'Vocalises' and Dvořák's 'Songs My Mother Taught Me.' On the other hand, 'Memories' by Dordra is often played lightly, but she sings it with full commitment. Following her previous album 'Cantabile,' each track is a delightful challenge of 'how much more can she do,' making it an album full of anticipation. (Yasuki Matsumoto)
