Ruth Gipps, a 20th-century British composer, showed musical talent from childhood. In 1937, at age 16, she entered the Royal College of Music to study oboe and piano, and learned composition from Vaughan Williams and Gordon Jacob. During her university years, she performed Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2, and at the Proms in 1942, her symphonic poem 『Knight in Armour』 was performed by Henry Wood. During the war, she became principal oboist of the Birmingham City Symphony Orchestra, but after the war, upon returning to London, her performance opportunities decreased, leading her to focus on composing chamber music and teaching. This album features her chamber works composed between 1938 and 1990, utilizing oboe and cor anglais. Juliana Koch is the principal oboist of the London Symphony Orchestra. In 2018, she was appointed professor of oboe at the Royal College of Music and is involved in mentoring students.
