Goro, whose wife Reiko has left him, returns to his hometown of Furano with his young daughter Jun and her sister Hotaru. Jun, surprised by the living conditions in an abandoned house with no electricity or water, writes a letter to Reiko expressing her desire to return to Tokyo.Reiko's lawyer, Honda, comes from Tokyo to meet Jun and Hotaru. Jun is set to return to Tokyo, but is persuaded to stay after Kiyoshi tells him, "You lose if you run away." However, Jun, still not accustomed to life in Furano, feels dissatisfied because his father favors Hotaru.
Meanwhile, Reiko's younger sister Yukiko is troubled by memories of her breakup with her lover in Tokyo.
