This traditional Aizu folk toy, the "Okieage Koboshi," has a charming and nostalgic face that is adorable and full of personality.
The Okieage Koboshi is a traditional folk craft, and together with the pinwheel and Hatsune, it is called "Aizu San Enki" (Aizu Three Good Omens). Even if it falls over, it immediately gets back up, embodying the spirit of "seven falls, eight rises," which signifies resilience and perseverance through hardships. It has been loved by people for over 400 years.
It is customary to prepare one more than the number of family members to pray for the prosperity of the family.
Many of the papier-mâché items from the Aizu region are auspicious ornaments made to pray for good luck, ward off evil, ensure a bountiful harvest, and promote business prosperity.
Gifts such as the "Akabeko" (red cow) to celebrate a child's birth, and the "Okieage Koboshi" that rises even after falling, each carry wishes and hopes.
The process involves attaching paper to a wooden mold to create a shape, solidifying it with gofun (powdered oyster shell), and then skilled artisans paint it to give it a charming expression. The different shapes and facial features are unique to handcrafted work.
