Performance: Seiya Ueno (Flute), Takaya Sano (Piano)
Recording: November 16-17, 2011, Sagamiko Exchange Center
Born in Tokyo in 1989. After attending Tokyo Metropolitan High School of Arts, he entered the Faculty of Music at Tokyo University of the Arts. In his second year at the university, he studied abroad at the Conservatoire de Paris. In 2008, he won the Grand Prix at the 8th Jean-Pierre Rampal International Flute Competition, instantly drawing attention.
While possessing perfect and flawless technique, he does not indulge in that skill, instead showcasing music filled with rich imagination and a singing heart. The simpler the melody, the more his characteristics stand out. His music, expressed through a spacious tone, particularly beautiful soft playing (even in the highest registers!), a variety of vibrato, and from long phrases to nuances that speak like words, conveys a dignified elegance and well-considered intellect. On the other hand, his great characteristic is his ability to skillfully balance good-natured "understandability" with sophisticated musicality, using exquisite flair at key moments as his weapon. The fact that he can make Doppler's "Fantaisie pastorale hongroise," which feels like it has been played to death, sound so fresh is not ordinary sensibility, and already hints at his great talent.
His innovative performance style, which is not bound by so-called traditional flute-like qualities, was not easily understood by those around him while he was studying in Japan. However, his talent and conviction were highly praised overseas, including winning first prize at the Rampal Competition, and his abilities became known, making him a figure who is truly bringing about a "restoration" in the flute world. On the other hand, he not only engages with classical music but also with contemporary music and popular music that extend from it, actively performing good and relatable songs on stage and captivating the hearts of the audience. His stance, which clearly distinguishes itself from so-called business-strategic crossover routes, can be said to have sufficient potential to blow a fresh breeze into the classical world.
On his debut album, he boldly challenged himself by choosing only super-famous pieces, succeeding in highlighting Ueno's rare talent. In addition to interspersing contemporary pieces (Chokker/Bolling) among them, he includes Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Tōfu" and Yumi Matsutoya's "Haru yo Koi" (a frequent encore piece for Ueno) as bonus tracks.
