[Tristan und Isolde with fresh charm from Maestro Barenboim and visionary Tcherniakov appears!]
Knight Tristan sets sail to escort Princess Isolde of Ireland, who is to become the bride of his uncle, King Marke. However, Tristan had previously defeated Isolde's fiancé in a duel and was nursed back to health by Isolde. On the return voyage, they learn of this fact and are consumed by conflicting emotions of love and hate. They drink poison, intending to die, but drink an aphrodisiac, secretly substituted by Isolde's maid Brangäne, and fall into a consuming passion. Tristan is attacked by King Marke and his retainers, who have discovered their affair. Although he escapes from the King's castle, Tristan, mortally wounded, breathes his last in Isolde's arms...
Conductor Daniel Barenboim holds Tristan und Isolde as a cherished repertoire piece, having staged it at various opera houses, including the Bayreuth Festival in the 1980s. In this 2018 production at the Berlin State Opera, he teams up with director Dmitri Tcherniakov, highly sought after by opera houses worldwide, to bring a fresh charm to this Tristan.
Dmitri Tcherniakov's direction sheds light on the psychological aspects of the drama, using skillful projection mapping to visually represent the characters' inner emotional movements. Furthermore, this high-level production features the finest Wagnerian singers of our time. Andreas Schager, a regular at the Bayreuth Festival and acclaimed for his Parsifal, takes on the role of Tristan. Anja Kampe, also highly regarded for her Wagnerian female roles, plays Isolde, and Ekaterina Gubanova, who received acclaim for her performances in Japan, is cast as Brangäne. Barenboim's baton leads the Staatskapelle Berlin in meticulously portraying this world of intoxicating love.
