About the artist

A super icon of soul music representing the 20th century. Her unique voice is truly a cultural heritage. Born in Memphis in 1942. Her father, C. L. Franklin, was a well-known wealthy Baptist minister across the U.S. Alessa joined her father's choir at age 9, became a solo singer at 12, and debuted on record at 14 in 1956. In 1960, Alessa, following the success of gospel-based pop singer Sam Cooke, signed with Columbia Records (now Sony Records). During her six years at Columbia, Alessa produced a variety of records across different markets without a clear direction, wasting her abundant talent. In November 1966, Jerry Wexler, a producer at Atlantic Records who believed in Alessa's innate talent, signed her to Atlantic, took her to Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama, and let her sing freely with straightforward, minimalistic arrangements. Alessa expressed emotions that had been smoldering inside her for a long time, resonating sharply not only with black audiences but also with the rock-generation white audience. Subsequently, Alessa scored hits with "Respect," "Natural Woman," "Chains of Fools," "Think," and others, and gradually became known as the "Queen of Soul." She remained with Atlantic Records for 14 years until moving to Arista in 1980, leaving behind many excellent records.
