[A Historic Live Recording by the Berliner Philharmoniker for the First Time in 109 Years of Symphony No. 1, Completed by Langgaard at Age 17!]
Rued Langgaard, born in 1893, is one of the greatest geniuses in Danish music history. He made his debut concert playing the organ at the age of 11, and Grieg, who heard it, is said to have been not only impressed but also awestruck. Langgaard began working on his Symphony No. 1 at the age of 14 and completed it at 17. The work consists of five movements, each titled "Waves Crashing and Glimpses of the Sun," "Mountain Flowers," "Voices from the Past," "Climbing the Mountain," and "Courage," and is structured like a symphonic poem. However, due to its long duration and massive orchestral forces, the Danish Concert Society, whose mission was to perform Danish orchestral works, refused to perform it. Langgaard then approached Berlin, where his family occasionally visited, and entrusted the score to Arthur Nikisch, which became the breakthrough for the premiere. The premiere on April 10, 1913, conducted by Max Fiedler with a total of 102 musicians from the Berliner Philharmoniker, was a great success, and the 19-year-old Langgaard was called back to the stage six times.
After the premiere, Langgaard donated the full score used for the performance to the Berlin Institute of Music. The full score was taken to Moscow by Soviet troops at the end of World War II but returned to East Berlin in 1959. This recording is a live recording of the re-performance by the Berliner Philharmoniker, 109 years after the premiere. Oramo's conducting, with its rich low frequencies, long-breathed climaxes, and grand musical scope, elicits a powerful performance from the Berliner Philharmoniker, unfolding the rich and magnificent world of the late Romantic period. The high-quality SACD hybrid release is also a welcome feature.

*The domestic edition includes a Japanese translation of the original liner notes.
