Bruno Walter & Vienna Philharmonic Live 1948-1956[1]
■ The first time Bruno Walter conducted the Vienna Philharmonic was on January 21, 1907, at a concert commemorating Otto Nicolai. Since then, he conducted 189 performances until the opening concert of the Vienna Art Week on May 29, 1960, which commemorated Mahler's 100th birthday. Visiting Vienna in his youth, Walter was captivated by the unique sound of the Vienna Philharmonic, and even over half a century later, he praised the sound as a gift of the orchestra's tradition.
■ In 1975, Japan's CBS Sony (at that time) released a limited edition LP set of four discs containing live recordings of various concerts where Walter and the Vienna Philharmonic performed in Vienna and Salzburg after World War II, after five years of negotiations with the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) and the UK’s Decca. Due to the richness of the performance content, it caused a sensation. All these recordings were remastered in DSD from the 38cm mono analog master provided by ORF, after 18 years, reviving their historical value.
