In February 2019, Haitink conducted a live recording of Beethoven's "Ninth"!
About four months after this concert, Haitink announced his retirement from conducting. In an interview on June 12, he said, "Having turned 90, I no longer intend to conduct, and once I stop, I will never conduct again." His final concert as a conductor was held in Lucerne on September 6, marking the end of his 65-year career as a conductor.
This "Ninth" just before his retirement announcement is truly a summary of Haitink’s conducting career. You can hear the passionate exchanges with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, which he has maintained a good relationship with over many years. In the first and second movements, he maintains a slow yet intense expression; in the third movement, he shows meditative beauty; and in the final movement, Haitink builds a climax with majestic solo and chorus, responding to his passionate feelings. The orchestra responds with full effort, capturing a once-in-a-lifetime passionate performance.
