The answer derived from the long-term experience of top angler Yasuyuki Nishimoto is the "Kodai-bari" (small sea bream hook).

Target Species

We developed hook size 20, imagining PE line #2, 10kg yellowtail, and 5kg greater amberjack/greater amberjack, and ordered a hardness that would bend just before breaking.
Depending on where the hook sets, the thin shank design may open, but in development tests, even 30kg class yellowfin tuna, which are clearly oversized, were caught. The hook, which firmly lodges in the jawbone, opens only slightly, demonstrating its excellent performance.

Many wide-gaped models have their hook points facing almost parallel to the assist line. When targeting yellowtail, these can pick up small, clinging bites from inactive fish.
On the other hand, this ease of hooking can be detrimental, leading to incidental hooking around the body or mouth. The hook points parallel to the assist line do not penetrate deeply, causing deformation or tearing of the flesh during fights with large fish.

While Aogijutsu may result in slightly fewer bites, the hook reliably reaches the mouth, and because the hook point faces the tip of the assist, it maximizes its inherent hooking performance and reliably hooks the jawbone.
