Recorded live in January 2005. Enjoy a fulfilling Bruckner performance by Jansons, who had just celebrated his 62nd birthday, at the first important concert of the new year in Munich. This was also a live album initially distributed only to orchestra members, but it became available to the public last year as one disc from Jansons' 6-disc "Bruckner Collection." This is the first time it is being sold separately.
Jansons uses the "Third Version" revised in 1889. This third version, which he worked on around the time he completed the first version of Symphony No. 8, omits Wagnerian motifs that were included in the initial conception and also revises the orchestration. Its high degree of perfection is highly regarded, and many conductors now use this third version. Jansons' performance is full of contrast; in the first movement, which uses various materials, his tempo control, which shifts moment by moment, is superb, and in the lyrical second movement, he does not forget to let the melodies sing fully. The rough waltz rhythm in the third movement, so characteristic of Bruckner, is handled lightly. In the majestic fourth movement, while delivering energetic music, he makes the opening theme of the first movement sing out triumphantly at the end of the piece.
The thunderous applause that erupts after a moment of silence, once the last note has faded, attests to the brilliance of this performance.
