【Exciting and fresh! Adam Fischer’s complete Brahms symphonies】From Mozart, Beethoven, to Brahms. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the collaboration between the eternally youthful Adam Fischer and the Danish Chamber Orchestra, this collection offers new sounds, vitality, and surprises in Brahms!Adam Fischer has served as principal conductor of the Danish Chamber Orchestra (DCO) since 1998. He recorded the complete Mozart symphonies (DACAPO) from 2006 to 2013 and the complete Beethoven symphonies (NAXOS) from 2016 to 2019, earning high praise from critics and audiences alike. Especially, the Beethoven symphonies received accolades across Europe and was awarded the best among all CDs released during Beethoven Year by the ICMA (International Classical Music Award). As Fischer approaches his 25th year as DCO’s chief conductor in 2023, the Brahms symphonies recorded for this milestone are highly anticipated, showcasing even greater challenges.Fischer and DCO’s approach features a transparent sound with restrained vibrato and a brisk tempo emphasizing accents, characteristic of the so-called HIP style. Their bold phrasing, reflecting Fischer’s passionate personality, and skillful manipulation of balance between winds and strings produce a fresh resonance throughout. The violin wing configuration and clear bowing techniques create stimulating effects, such as the frequent phrase exchanges between the first and second violins in movements like the 1st Symphony’s 4th movement. Listeners familiar with Brahms will find many surprising moments in these thrilling performances. The 1st Symphony maintains a consistently fast tempo but adds contrast with well-placed pauses, creating dynamic variation. The expressive second movement and the buildup to the climax in the final movement are highlights. In the 2nd Symphony, the rich string sound contrasts with the bright brass tone. It begins very softly, with sudden explosive sounds in the final movement, a unique interpretation by Fischer. The 3rd Symphony features particularly impressive handling of dynamics and tempo, with meticulous conducting that makes one want to recheck the score, fully showcasing the orchestra’s skill.Fischer’s period-instrument interpretation of the 4th Symphony vividly characterizes each movement, weaving an unceasing musical flow. The Danish Chamber Orchestra, formerly affiliated with Danish Broadcasting (renamed from Danish Radio Sinfonietta to Danish National Chamber Orchestra in 2015), has been active under its current name since then. Fischer first collaborated with them in 1987 and has been their principal conductor since 1998, maintaining a long-standing relationship.Fischer emphasizes the importance of the orchestra’s characteristics, aiming to bring out each ensemble’s individuality and potential, as stated in an interview in the booklet (English). The performance is a true reflection of “our Brahms,” not just “my Brahms,” resulting in a fulfilling interpretation.
