Super Furry Animals' sixth studio album, 'Phantom Power,' is filled with an eerie mood that makes it seem as if an unknown spirit is present from start to finish. This album, which tackles heavy themes such as death, illness, and holy war, was undoubtedly created during a dark period. However, fortunately, this band has enough brightness to hold back the executioner’s hand. Musically, this is an album where a strong light pushes away the dark themes, and semi-acoustic ballads and gaudy glam rock do not attract darkness. For example, the song in the style of The Beatles, sung enthusiastically by Gruff Rhys in a Freak Power style, 'Hello Sunshine,' goes like this: 'I'm a minger/You're minger too/So come on mingers/ I want to ming with you.' This album also contains surprisingly dark songs. 'Out of Control' has an unprecedented gloomy finish, filled with an atmosphere reminiscent of a torture chamber akin to The Stooges. But overall, it is very playful. In the upbeat glam song 'Golden Retriever,' Rhys twists the language of old bluesmen into a modern style. Also, in songs like 'Slow Life,' Kian Kearney's keyboard sounds shine more than before. It is certainly a chaotic album. But it is cohesive, like The Beatles' 'White Album.' Unfazed by misfortune.
