Maki Mori

Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts and its graduate school, majoring in solo singing. Studied under Joji Takahashi.
After completing the Agency for Cultural Affairs Opera Training Institute, she studied at the Verdi Conservatory in Milan as an artist-in-residence for the Agency for Cultural Affairs, won the Goto Memorial Cultural Property Foundation Opera Newcomer Award, and studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. She has won numerous international competitions, including the Plácido Domingo World Opera Competition.
Since her American debut at the Washington National Opera, she has performed "The Abduction from the Seraglio," "Rigoletto," "Parsifal," "The Tales of Hoffmann," "The Bat," and "Welt" with Domingo, Frederica von Stade, Roberto Alagna, Kent Nagano, June Anderson, Wolfgang Brendel, and Elena Obraztsova, earning high praise. In 2005, she performed at Suntory Hall in "La Bohème" with Sabatini and Luizzo, and in Venice in a new opera using Gauguin’s original text, as well as "Rigoletto" at the Sofia National Opera.
She has collaborated with conductors such as Seiji Ozawa, Myung-Whun Chung, Ashkenazy, Bernardini, Paavo Järvi, and with orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, and Gewandhaus Orchestra. She has performed with the three tenors, sharing the stage with Carreras and Pavarotti.
In Japan, she is active with a wide repertoire from classical to contemporary, performing works such as Mozart’s "Requiem" and "Ninth Symphony" with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, and is highly acclaimed for her rare coloratura technique, transparent voice, deep musicality, and striking appearance. She has also performed the national anthem at the Athens Olympics opening ceremony and Major League Baseball opening games, attracting media attention as a leading international Japanese soprano.
Her solo recordings include a recital at Carnegie Hall in New York, "If You Were Near (Bist du bei mir)," and "My Dear Friend (Care compagne)" (avex-CLASSICS), and a DVD of Gauguin’s opera in Venice. In 2007, she debuted at the Dresden State Opera as Sophie in Richard Strauss’s "Der Rosenkavalier," earning high praise, and performed again at the Dresden State Opera Japan tour in November, followed by touring with the Dresden State Opera Chamber Orchestra in Japan.
