**[Approaching the Original Form of the Masterpiece Opera, Antonacci-Gardiner-Noble's "Carmen"]**
"Carmen," a masterpiece representing French opera. Its premiere at the Opéra Comique in Paris in 1875 shocked audiences with its raw depiction of the lower classes and tragic ending, resulting in a poor reception. Shortly after, Bizet, in despair, passed away at the young age of 36. However, with its accessible music and dramatic power, and aided by the effective adaptation into a grand opera style by Bizet's friend Guiraud, the work is now considered one of the most popular opera performances worldwide.
This video is a valuable record of a performance staged in June 2009 at the Opéra Comique in Paris, the very location of the premiere. It was an initiative to explore the original form of "Carmen" as conceived by Bizet, an opera comique (a sung drama with spoken dialogue).
The orchestra is the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, led by John Eliot Gardiner, who has a proven track record of pursuing the original form of Romantic music, beginning with Beethoven. The direction is by the master craftsman Adrian Noble, who served as artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company for many years. The singers, including Anna Caterina Antonacci, one of the foremost Carmens of our time, Andrew Richards in the wild role of Don José, Anne-Catherine Gillet as the innocent Micaëla, and Nicolas Cavallier as the dashing bullfighter Escamillo, respond brilliantly to the music and stage created by this powerful duo with nuanced acting and singing befitting an opera comique.
