Rusalka, a water nymph, falls in love with a human prince. She is transformed into a human by the sorceress Ježibaba, but in exchange, she must give up her voice. Furthermore, she agrees to a condition: if she cannot win the prince's love, both will be eternally cursed. The two fall in love, but on their wedding day, the prince, astonishingly, becomes infatuated with a foreign princess...
Glyndebourne Festival Music Director Robin Ticciati performs Dvořák's beautiful, rich melodies and rhythmic music with lyrical and dynamic flair, met by a superb cast of singers and dancers. Particularly impressive is the poignant singing of Sally Matthews as Rusalka. The stage production, with set design, direction, and choreography all by British stage director Mary Stuart, adds an exciting, otherworldly color to the tragic love story of the water nymph.
