Primal Scream has never rested on its laurels. This "Dirty Hits" features songs arranged chronologically, highlighting their journey of revolution with each album release. Kicking off the album is the acid-tinged dub track "Loaded" from their breakthrough album "Screamadelica." The blaring horns perfectly capture the hedonism that album championed. There's no better way to start this collection.
Moving on a bit. With "Give Out But Don’t Give Up," the band took an unexpected turn, delivering unashamed rock and roll in the spirit of The Rolling Stones. This album spawned "Jailbird" and "Rocks." Around the time "Give Out~" was sealed away as a past they'd rather forget, the impactful "Vanishing Point" arrived. While maintaining their rock and roll pride, they forcefully pushed it into a darker style. "Kowalski" and "Burning Wheel" perfectly encapsulate this direction.
Buoyed by this momentum, they released "Xtrmntr." Thick, raw noise was supported by blazing synth melodies and bitter lyrics, with "Swastika Eyes" and "Kill All Hippies" becoming hits. And now, finally, we arrive at "Dirty Hits." In addition to the aforementioned tracks, it includes several songs from their more recent work, "Evil Heat," which features more extreme and structured noise, and an unreleased version of "Some Velvet Morning" featuring Kate Moss.
Many argue that Primal Scream is a band best appreciated album by album, and that their true essence is lost in a greatest hits compilation. However, "Dirty Hits" is a thoroughly rewarding listen, reminding us just how much excellent music they have produced over the years.
