『Think Tank』 is probably a significant album for Blur. Since it was recorded after original member Graham Coxon left. So, is this Blur comeback album not as good? Not at all. Like the previous album, it is a mixture of ideas but has a cohesive feel.
Following Damon Albarn's solo project, Gorillaz's flashy pop, and the highly emotional previous album 『13』, the new album is soulful with a subtle flavor. There are also two rock numbers typical of Blur. 'Crazy Beat' reminds one of the lively standard 'Song 2', and 'We've Got A File On You' is short but well-made, with an incendiary punk band sound that seems to be fighting with a Moroccan snake charmer.
However, there are some changes. Damon Albarn's melodic sense remains intact, but without Coxon's destructive guitar, 『Think Tank』 gives the impression of a different band. Recording in Morocco and Damon's interest in Moroccan music brought change to Blur. 'Caravan' features slow rhythms reminiscent of camel pacing, and 'Gene by Gene' uses cross rhythms that evoke the desert, creating surprising sounds. It seems Blur is now pursuing their own unique music rather than traditional rock. Some fans might feel they have evolved too much to keep up, but for fans who can accept Blur as they are—constantly changing—this 『Think Tank』 is a very rewarding listen.
