Evgeny Keyshing has made bold choices in assembling this program. Schumann’s Piano Sonata No. 1 is a grand but somewhat unruly work, and it is difficult to perform it cohesively, which is why it is not very popular. "Carnaval" is one of Schumann’s well-known masterpieces, and many pianists have recorded and competed with it over the years. Keyshing’s performance of this sonata is a complete success. He possesses broad-mindedness, structural sense, and outstanding technique, which make the music convincing and keep the listener’s interest for over 30 minutes without boredom. As for "Carnaval," it is not as successful. The pianist’s fingers sometimes run wild in fast passages, turning the music into a display of technique rather than musical expression. Still, repeated listening reveals how well Keyshing characterizes most of this piece and how carefully he attends to details, making Schumann’s ideas and counterpoint clearly audible. Overall, this disc may not earn an A+ grade, but it is well worth listening to, especially for Schumann fans who are not very familiar with this sonata. It is a must-listen.
